Hello beautiful blogs readers, today I am Matheran where we are going to explore every corner and every inch of this place now lets begin with Top places to visit in MATHERAN.

Matheran is a hill station and a municipal council in Karjat Tahsil in the Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Matheran is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Matheran is one of the smallest hill stations in India.

It is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is about 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. Matheran’s proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a weekend getaway for urban residents. Matheran, which means “forest on the forehead” (of the mountains) is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.

There are around 38 designated look-out “points” (viewpoints) in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. Louisa Point has views of Prabal Fort. Other viewpoints include One Tree Hill Point, Heart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, and Rambagh Point.

There are many hotels and Parsi bungalows in the area. Old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. The roads are not metalled and are made of red laterite earth.

HISTORY from the pages of Top places to visit in MATHERAN

Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is the birthplace of freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a Barber family.

The state government has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India’s other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra.

Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.

WILDLIFE from the pages of Top places to visit in MATHERAN

The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. Domesticated horses for riding are also in large numbers and are one of the symbols of Matheran.

Inside the forest animals like barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, fox, wild boar, mongoose may be found. But these animals are rare in numbers compared to monkeys and usually do not venture where humans are present. So most likely one does not come across them. There have been reports of leopard sightings in Matheran few times in last decade.

Leopards are not known to dwell in Matheran. But due to dense forests in valleys surrounding Matheran leopards who are on the roam may climb Matheran.

Nowadays leopard sightings by locals are extremely rare due to dwindling leopard population in general all over the country. There has been no known incidence of leopard attacks in Matheran.

The forests of Matheran have attracted many botanists who have studied the flora of Matheran: Smyth J.Y.(1871), Birdwood H.M. (1886) and (1896), Cooke T. (1887–1901), Woodrow G.M. (1897-1901), Irani N.A.(1962), Satyanarayana & Mudliar (1959), Vartak, V.D.(1966), Kothari & Moorthy (1993). A good collection of the dried plants is deposited in Blatter Herbarium, St. Xavier’s College, Bombay, Mumbai.

Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. Matheran was declared an Eco-Sensitive zone (ESZ) by the Union Environment Ministry on 4 February 2003[7] and can be called a health sanatorium in itself. The declaration as ESZ has led to the stoppage of developmental activities and construction of hazardous industries.

Conservation from the pages of Top places to visit in MATHERAN

The vegetation of the area depends on the type and depth of the soil. Due to poor soil depth, the vegetation on the edges of the plateaus is poor. Due to heavy rainfall, dissected hilly terrain and excessive leaching of the soil, the exposed areas become less fertile and become less moisture retentive, resulting in shallow rooted vegetation. It is required to plant trees to protect the soil cover from losing its valuable humidity and fertility.

The winds are very strong and blow from west or southwest during monsoon and also dry winds blow during the three months from January to March. These winds tend to shear and bend the plant parts and absorb the moisture from the plants.

Matheran is a gorgeous hill station that has an absolutely unpolluted atmosphere all around the place. Sapno ki Nagri Mumbai

आगतम् स्वागतम् सुस्वागतम् सपनों के शहर में आपका स्वागत है

It was a lazy Sunday morning. I woke up around 10 am, brushed my teeth, had breakfast and went off to bed again. Few minutes later, my cell phone rang. I answered the call. It was my friend Parinita from Guwahati, Assam. She said, “Hey Ruchi, How you doing?” and I replied, “I’m doing well. How are you?” and she replied, “I am good too. I’m visiting Mumbai on 20th June, 2012. I want you to take me through the streets of Mumbai. I have heard a lot about it but never got a chance to visit Mumbai.” And I replied, “You are most welcome. Definitely, will show you the Sapno ki Nagri Mumbai and am sure after you walk on the streets of Mumbai, you will definitely visit Mumbai frequently.” And she replied, “(Laughs) Thanks. Buh Bye. “And with this our conversation ended.

Day 1– First, we took a cab to get to Charni Road station.

From there we travelled in the train to reach our destination Bandra.

Mumbai is incomplete without the local trains. Parinita was surprised to see the crowd.  We soon reached Bandra. From there we took an auto for Elco Market. She shopped from the streets of Bandra. She said, “OMG! What cool and cheap stuff you get here. Why would one go to a mall to shop when one gets everything on the streets?” and I replied, “Yea, it’s cool. I shop from these streets only. Good for college going students like us.”

After she was done with her shopping, we went for lunch to Madras Cafe, Matunga to munch on Idli’s. It’s one of the best South India home in Mumbai. She loved the food out there. She went on munching. She said, “Ruchi, I never liked the South Indian food. But today, I just can’t stop munching on these Idli’s. I love you for bringing me here.” And I smiled at her.

Soon after that, we left for Worli. I decided to show her the Haji Ali Dargah and the Japanese graves which many mumbaikars are not aware of. We first visited the Haji Ali Dargah.

She was surprised to see that it was located in the middle of Worli Bay and the concrete footpath that runs to this holy place. In addition, she was surprised to notice that every day 1000 of Indians visit different holy places. After we reached the end of Marine Drive, we saw Victoria. We decided to take a ride. It cost us Rs. 150 for 5-7 minute ride. Super Expensive! But the ride was fun. It reminded us of that old era, when there were no vehicles except horse carts.

Our first day of journey to discover Mumbai ended well. The whole day was well spent. Parinita was very happy. When we reached home, she just couldn’t stop talking about Mumbai (the places we visited) to her parents.  I was happy to notice that she really did enjoy discovering Mumbai.

Day 2:  Today, it was our second day to discover Mumbai. Our first destination was to visit the Chinese Temple, Byculla, generally known as Kwan Tai Kon. We thought it would be a good idea to begin our day by worshipping a holy place. Usually, worshippers come during Chinese New Year to visit the temple.

Next we went to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. I took her there, because I wanted her to notice the ancient architecture which is influenced from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and Indian (Mughal and Hindu), which was built-in 1887. She did not enjoy watching the heritage building because she was not interested in the history and architecture. We hardly stood there for 10 minutes.

Later we decided we shall visit The RBI Monetary Museum, Fort and increase our knowledge about it. The museum is divided into 6 sections. Section 1: Concepts, Curiosities & the Idea of Money. This section is about the definition of money and gives information on its evolution. Section 2: Indian Coinage. This section displays coins through a time line right from 6-4 century B.C. to those of Independent India. Section 3: Coins to Bank Notes.

This section is about the transition of coins to Bank Notes. Section 4 is about Indian Paper Money. This section is about the display also includes representative notes of the Princely States and a collection of exigent money. Section 5: Know Your Currency. This section is about how currency is managed in India and the features of the contemporary Mahatma Gandhi Series of notes and the last Section 6: RBI and You.

This section is about everything one wants to know about the RBI and doesn’t know whom to ask. Visiting the museum was the best part of the day. We got to learn a lot of things about the RBI Monetary

After filling our stomachs, I took her  for the tour of Gateway of India built-in 1911.  The journey to discover Mumbai is incomplete without the tour of Gateway of India.

Before there was a Shell Museum, there were the shell collectors. They were passionate about this special place—Sanibel Island, one of the best shell-collecting spots in the world. They dreamed of establishing a museum dedicated entirely to shells and the environmental importance of mollusks, the animals that create them.

In 1989, three local brothers, Francis, Samuel, and John Bailey, generously deeded eight acres of wetland on Sanibel Captiva Road to the Museum. They used the gift to memorialize their parents, Frank P. Bailey and Annie Mead Matthews, whose names the Museum now bears.

This landmark is located 6 km away from a town based in Nagoa road.

Diu Museum – A Restored Church from the pages of Best Places to visit in DIU Island

This edifice came under various functions like an Orphanage, Old Age Home, Police Station and prior to liberation, it housed the Angolan Battalion. Post-liberation, it was abandoned for many years. Later in 1992, the church was converted into a museum.

Has a very old collection of wooden Catholic saints going back to the 16thC. Once a year, on All Saints Day, it is used for Mass. The place would barely make the cut as a museum as it is very small place which used to be a church. The place itself is in ruins with wall paint information. Just to point out it is next to St Paul Church, which tourists visit, so everyone scraped at multiple places and birds making it their home. It has some 30 wooden statues with just the names for the just visits the museum as well.

The Diu Museum is among the most famous Diu tourist places and is a part of the St. Thomas Church which was converted into a museum shortly after it was built in 1598. While the museum part is relatively new and well-kept, the church area has been allowed to restore its former glory and ancient look.

You’ll find that the building bears a worn out look and has faded portraits and paintings that the Portuguese had left behind. You’ll also be mesmerised by the beautiful garden path that leads up to the museum, one of the most attractive places to see in Diu.

INS Khukri Memorial – Plunge into The History

Indian Naval Ship Khukri was a frigate of the Indian Navy. During the Indo Pak War in 1971, she fell prey to three torpedoes fired by a Pakistan submarine on 9/12/1971 and sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu taking down with her a crew of 18 Officers and 176 Sailors.

There is a memorial to the sailors in Diu. The memorial consists of a scale model of Khukri encased in a glass house, placed atop a hillock facing the sea.

INS Khukri Memorial is a monument built commemorating the INS Khukri that sunk during the 1971 war between Pakistan and India. The submarine was shot with torpedoes and started to sink when the 18 officers and 176 sailors on it were issued the orders to save their lives and hand them over to the invaders. However, the officers chose to embrace death rather than surrendering to the enemies.

Later the commanding officer Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla was awarded Mahavir Chakra posthumously. The monument stands till date a reminder of the valiant soldiers, and is visited by many tourists every year.

Diu Fort – Must-Visit Place from the pages of Best Places to visit in DIU Island

The fortress, which borders on the town of Diu, was built in 1535 subsequent to a defense alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor attempted to annex this territory. It was strengthened over the years, till 1546.

You can enjoy a surreal view of the horizons from the fort and hear the crashing sea waves on the fort walls sending foam to its upper reaches! The lighthouse is closed to the public. Pani Kotta

Pani Kotha is a structure dating back to the 12th century that is bang in the middle of the sea without any landmass connecting to it and can be viewed from the Fort Diu near the India Union Territory of Diu which is a set of islands. Built by the Portuguese colonial forces that invaded Goa and many other parts of coastal India, the Pani Kotha as it is referred to by locals, was an isolated complex structure built in the middle of the sea to house prisoners.

The Portuguese had named it Fortim du Mar and it was built in the shape of a towering fortress with no windows and a single entrance and it used to be a massive spiralling prison reservoir in those days.

Pani Kotha or Fortim do Mar as named by the Portuguese is a 12th-century edifice. Once a fort it was made to look like a ship to mislead invaders. Since it is located on an islet at the mouth of the creek of the Arabian sea, now it is a historical monument and one of the top tourist places in Diu.

The fort was later used as a prison and was controlled by the Portuguese along with the Diu fort. This stone fort was fortified in the year 1588 by adding a few structures. Besides this, a small chapel was erected in the year 1638 as a dedication to Our Lady of the Sea.

The fort also houses barracks, a warehouse and a lighthouse from where you get a panoramic view of the Diu fort, jetty and even the Ghogla village. One sight to behold is the colourful lights projected at the fort along with the music as part of a light and sound event is magnificent.

The page of Vibe in Dharamkot:

The best thing about Dharamkot is the vibe.  Let me try to describe the vibe here if I can.  The vibe is a mix of some of magic, pure spiritual energy of the Himalayas, happiness of the simple folks that live there, peace & serenity and a feeling on oneness with the nature. The sounds of mountain birds, the whistling of air through deodar tree leaves, the distant smells of farm animals mixed with herb-based cooking will awaken all your senses.  This is a good spot for early morning yoga and meditation – if you’re in that sort of stuff.

PLACES TO VISIT in Dharamkot: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

McLeod Ganj:

It is about 9 kms. from Dharamkot. This place is known as Upper Dharamsala and is the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government – in –exile. There are beautiful colonial houses of the British era and a church which is the resting place of Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India who liked the place. He died while on tour of this place. There are some beautiful monasteries and famous ancient temples in the area. There is a Museum on Tibetan culture, art and crafts within the Tsuglagkhang Complex where the Dalai Lama resides. There are forts within the area. Most of them are in ruins after the devastating earthquake in 1905.

Triund:

his small hamlet lies at the base of the majestic Dauladhar range of mountains and is a haven for trekkers. There is an old trail through this place used by the Gaddi shepherds of the Chamba Valley. Devi Himani Chamunda:

Situated at an altitude of 10500 feet above sea level, this temple can be visited only by mid-March to early November after which, the temple will be closed due to freezing winter. There are two other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman.

Bhagsunag Shiv Mandir and Bhagsunag Waterfalls:

The legend is that when King Bhagsu, the demon king ruled with his capital at Ajmer during the Thretha yug, there was a severe drought in the capital. The people of Ajmer beseeched him to provide water.

The king being an Asura (Demon) could use his magical powers to draw all the water from the Lake Nag Dal. On his way back with the magical pot containing the entire water from the lake, he fell tired and went to sleep in a glade. The Nag Devta on his visit to the lake found the lake empty and was furious of the deed. He traced the footsteps to the Asura King and when the king refused to part with the water, the Nag Devta challenged the king to a duel. In the ensuing duel, the king was mortally wounded and requested the Nag Devta to ensure that water be provided to his people as a boon.

This was granted and water continues to flow. The place came to be known as Bhagsunag, a derivation of both the names. Years later, in the beginning of the Kali Yug, King Dharamchand ruled this place and one night he had a vision of Lord Shiva asking him to build a temple at the place. The temple is believed to be 5080 years old.

Trek to Triund and camp there overnight from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Triund is four hours hike away from Dharamkot. I recommend you start this hike very early in the morning and camp at Triund at night. You don’t have to carry a tent because it is possible to rent one there. The hike is almost fully uphill and is strenuous. For more information, read my travel guide for Triund.

Vegan Food in Blue Caterpillar and Once in Nature

To continue my talk about the awesome food in this area, I must mention how presently surprised we were to discover a few Vegan cafes in this village. The most famous one is towards the other side of the village, on the way to Bhagsu near the rocks. It’s very easy to find this because you will find many rocks with “Vegan Café” painted on them and they will lead you to this place.

When we visited, there was live trance music and a few traveling artists with their work on display. There were a few other vegan cafes around as well. Do check out Blue Caterpillar and Once in Nature if you’re a Vegan.  Personally, I tried to be a Vegan for a few weeks but had to give up because I can’t quit Honey.–

About Dharamkot from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Dharamkot is a village adjoining McLeod Ganj that oozes sparkling sceneries. Just three kilometres to the north of McLeod Ganj, forests of towering pines and rhododendrons welcome you to experience bliss first-hand. Not far from Dal Lake, the festival-fair organized every year adds to the vividness of Dharamkot. More spellbinding views of the Dhauladhar range await you, and a spiritual retreat at one of the several dedicated centres is just a step away.

Although located only a stone’s throw away, the village of Dharamkot is in complete contrast to the Tibetan realms of McLeod Ganj. Trek to the villages at Naddi and Triund, which are right around the bend, and delve into the offerings of bountiful nature. A few cafes en route to Dharamkot sees the crowd dwindling, and peace is on the offing at throwaway prices.

One of the most popular things to do among hikers is to rent a room in relatively noiseless Dharamkot and travel back and forth to McLeod Ganj—with the goal being solitude. Getting one’s own stock of alcohol from a kilometre away and chilling in the cafes is another one of travellers’ favourites.

Things do in DHARAMKOT: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the most popular and easiest treks in Himachal Pradesh. Every year lot of trekkers and tourists hike this astonishingly beautiful trek. Triund is at an altitude of about 2,827 m in Kangra valley. It is around 8 km trek from Dharamkot starting from the Gallu Devi temple where people going for trek register their names. The reason this peak called Triund is because you can visually perceive three snow-capped mountains Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal, and Mani Mahesh Kailash.

Triund trek will take around 4 hours to complete. You will experience an enthralling view of the Dhauladhar range & the Kangra valley, the pristine snow glittering in the sunlight, and exploration of the forest amidst pine and oak trees that make any trip to the mountains so special. At the top you can rent a tent or install your own I highly recommend staying at Triund for one night to enjoy adorable sunrise in the early morning.

Those who are in love with trekking can additionally visit Snowline that is a 2-3 hour trek from Triund. It is conventionally a stop for those wanting to go further up to Laka Glacier & Indrahar Pass trek. Walking on the snowline and reaching to the Laka Glacier- all filled with snow & ice that will give you spectacular and freezing views of the place.

No Name Waterfall from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Unlike the famous but crowded Bhagsu waterfall that has the same distance from Dharamkot & Mcleodganj, No Name Waterfall is less kenned hence it is quite a peaceful place to enjoy hiking & water. It is about a 1-hour trek from Daharmkot in the same way as Triund trek near a village called Gallu. The view of the waterfall made it all worth the trek. It is virtually hidden by stone boulders and the curves of the hills. You can enjoy your time by dipping your feet in the ice-cold water and absorbing nature’s beauty. You can additionally enjoy some snacks or refreshments at Sunset Cafe near Gallu village.

Yoga & Meditation from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

The fresh mountain breeze, stunning landscape, and abundant natural beauty create an impeccable environment to practice Yoga and Meditation. Tushita Meditation Centre is the most popular meditation center in Himachal. All the classes are led by experienced Buddhist practitioners. It offers a wealth of meditation and spiritual retreat facilities along with courses on Buddhism. Here you can completely immerse yourself in silent meditation amidst the beautiful, natural environment. It withal offers accommodation to the disciple who joins them for short term courses. There are also a good number of yoga retreat centers like Himalaya Iyengar yoga center Himalayan LOTUS YOGA and more.

Food In Dharamkot from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Every year a lot of Israelis, Europeans, and Tibetans travelers visit Dharamkot. As a result, most of the café serves delicious Italian, Israeli, Tibetan, and Asian cuisine. Strangely, lasagnas, pasta, pancakes, and hummus taste superior to Indian food. It has many places to eat but Trek N Dine, Morgan’s café, and Bodhi Green café are my personal favorites. You will simply never have a bad meal here.

Trek N Dine has great ambiance and accommodates high-quality food. The rooftop terrace of Mrgan’s cafe has the most glorious view of the mountains. Bodhi Green is the organic vegan cafe that serves the best vegan food made with dress ingredients. Bhagsu cake is the most amazing dessert to eat in this area that has crunchy pie crust, layered with sticky caramel sauce, and topped with dark chocolate or white chocolate. Overall I can verbalize you fall in love with the food in Dharamkot.

Drinking: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

If you like drinking light alcohol, you can try some of the few Himalayan fruit wines and apple cedar which you will easily find in the grocery shops for INR 200 – 300. My favorite was the peach wine but the shopkeeper insisted I try Kiwi as well which was the highest selling. Everything herbal is available in plenty so if you want, you can skip alchohol altogether.

Where To Stay In Dharamkot from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Dharamkot is a quaint traditional Himachali village. Initially, there was a limited option to stay in Dharamkot. But now there are plenty of homestays, budget hotels, and few backpackers hostels too. Dharamkot hotels or stay options have boomed up in the recent past because the place is quite famous for foreign travelers, backpackers, and spiritual seekers.

Booking in advance is recommended because searching for a room can mean a lot of walking up & down and in peak season it can be difficult to find a room at all. If you arrive here without a booking, just keep in mind that the room rates are high at the entry point. They get cheaper as you enter the village and walk on the narrow road.

There are various online options to book hotels in Dharamkot like Booking.com Hostelworld.com and more. In my opinion, Dharamkot Inn, Alt Life, Zostel, and Shalom Backpackers are the best places to stay in Dharamkot. You can easily find decent accommodation at around INR 500.

Weather of Dharamkot: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Owing to its high altitude, the weather of Dharamkot remains cool and pleasant for most of the year. Winters here can be a bit harsh though for some people. From December until February, the region receives moderate snowfall and the temperature remains close to zero at this time. Things start to warm up a bit in March and this is when the tourist season here begins. The months of April, May, and June bring moderately warm days and pleasant nights which attracts thousands of tourists in the nearby areas of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Days, in fact, can get a little hot here in June but nights mostly remain pleasant.

July and August is the time of monsoon and it can pretty much rain anywhere and anytime in these two months. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for several days, enough to cause landslides and block roads. Monsoon recedes in early September but leaves behind plenty of greenery making the region look like it has just been washed clean. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green now turns Orange, giving a golden magical touch to the valleys around.

Winter starts to settle in towards the end of October and temperature starts to dip down again. By Mid-December, a snowfall can happen anytime, covering the entire region under a sheet of white.

Shopping in dharamkot: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

Dharamkot is just a small village and there isn’t much to buy here. There are only a handful of shops here selling groceries and other daily commodities. If you ware interested in shopping, you will have to come down to Mcleodganj and check in the market there. For a list of items that you can buy here, I will recommend you to read Mcleodganj Travel Guide.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

The best time to visit Dharamkot will be from mid – September to June. The monsoons arrive in July and will continue till mid – September. This season is not good for travelling around Dharamkot as there may be landslides. Summer starts in March and continues till June and temperature varies between 220C to 380 C. Autumn, from mid – September to November is excellent and the climate is generally pleasant at that time. Visitors can take light woolen / cotton clothes in summer and since winters will be severe, heavy woolen clothes are recommended.

ACTIVITIES: from the pages of Top 10 places to visit in DHARAMKOT

A lovely place for meditation, there are a few meditation centres in and around Kangra – Vipasana Meditation Centre, Thushitha Meditation Centre, which is a study centre for the Mahayana system of Buddhism and Dhamma Shikara.

Trekking is another activity that is prevalent in this area. Dharamkot is actually a base for the long haul trekkers as well as for the shorter trail. During summer, Paragliding is another activity and skiing is also held in the higher slopes.

So, what do you think about Dharamkot? You can also share your experiences if you visited this place.

Reason for visiting Jaipur from the pages of Jaipur  Pink city of India

My 11 pm Train to Jaipur, travelling by train is one of the most awe-striking experiences I have ever faced. It is an experience of lifetime and is a memory to cherish. A Train Journey is beautiful and the is no scope to get bored.

The crowd is so Universal that one can spot people belonging to most meagre professions & people belonging to high paid Jobs, Beggars, midwives and maidservants. I was in train and I buy some Salted peanuts in small pouches toffees and Namkeens! I had made some friend while travelling to train to grab a bite to eat with. I’ve had incredibly enlightening discussion about global issues, laughed Until I cried and made Unforgettable memories. The journey was bit long we talked so much that there was nothing left to talk about. Uncle Sitting there was listening to all our stories. He easily asked me If I would give him Some information about

AMRITSAR, Best 1 City of Holiness and much more.

Amritsar is 1 best city of Holiness. Amritsar is known throughout the world and especially by my Sikh brothers and sisters living in varied parts of this Planet, as a sacred place. Undoubtedly it is famous for its sanctity, culture and holiness. But it definitely has much more for the travellers and for tourists, also.

Hello and welcome to my Amritsar travel guide!

The city of Amritsar is set around the majestic Golden Temple, the world’s most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs. But that’s not all there are plenty of other things to do in Amritsar and I’m hoping to run you through them all.

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-more..There’s no denying that Amritsar is crazy and hectic. I guess it all depends where you’re at in your India journey. For me, fresh off the plane and about to start. I feel overwhelmed.  if you’ve been a while, Amritsar might not even phase you!

Let’s start the journey together. And make the journey speechless, with full of adventure and happiness.

Information about 1 best city of Holiness Amritsar

Amritsar is a city in the north western Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometres from the border with Pakistan. At the centre of its walled old town, the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara of the Sikh religion. Located in the state of Punjab, Amritsar has a mere 2.5 million people: a small city by Indian standards! Amritsar was one of the cheapest places to travel in India.

A quick history of Amritsar 1 best city of Holiness

Before we explore the many things to do in Amritsar, let’s touch upon the city’s rich history. Over 500 years ago, the land Amritsar is built upon was bought for 700 rupees. Fracking’ bargain!

Amritsar was founded by Sri Guru Ramdas’s ji, the fourth guru of the Sikhs in about 1574 A.D.

Before the city was founded, the area was covered with thick forests and had several lakes. To start the city the Guru invited 52 traders from different sectors belongings to nearby places like Patti and Kasur to settle here.

According to the historical Sikh records, the site was chosen by Guru Amar Das and called Guru da Chakk, after he had asked Ram Das to find land to start a new town with a man-made pool as its central point. After his coronation in 1574, and the hostile opposition he faced from the sons of Amar Das, Ram Das founded the town named after him as “Ramdaspur”. He started by completing the pool, and building his new official Guru centre and home next to it. He invited merchants and artisans from other parts of India to settle into the new town with him. The town grew to become the city of Amritsar, and the pool area grew into a temple complex after his son built the gurdwara Harmandir Sahib, and installed the scripture of Sikhism inside the new temple in 1604.

Old walled city

Uruk in ancient Sumer (Mesopotamia) is one of the world’s oldest known walled cities. Before that, the proto-city of Jericho in the West Bank had a wall surrounding it as early as the 8th millennium BC. The earliest known town wall in Europe is of Solnitsata, built in the 6th or 5th millennium BC.

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-more-sher-singhDuring Sikh Empire in Maharaja Ranjit Singh fortified the city starting from a wall at Katra Maha Singh area. Later, Sher Singh continued with the construction of the wall with twelve gates (Lahori Darwaja, Khazana, Hakeema, Rangar Nangalia, Gilwali, Ramgarhia, Doburji, Ahluwalia, Deori Kalan, Rambagh Deori, Shahzada and Lohgarh) in it and a fort named Dhoor Kot that had fortification 25 yards broad and 7 yards high. The circumference of the walled city was around five miles. Amritsar was a walled city and they build thirteenth gate to it known as Hall Gate.

Jallianwala Bagh massacre

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-moreJallianwala-BaghThe Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919, when Acting Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered troops of the British Indian Army to fire their rifles into a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab, killing at least 379 people.

Other events that have shaped Amritsar’s history include the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre where the British shot dead hundreds of innocent civilians, and Operation Blue Star, the standoff between the governments and militant Sikhs inside the Golden Temple. The government killed 83 Sikhs and the prime minister was subsequently assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards. A bloody history, to say the least!

Things to do in 1 best city of Holiness Amritsar

Rather than hundreds of activities, there are just a few main things to do in Amritsar. None were remotely similar to things I’ve done elsewhere so it was a memorable trip for me, even if I didn’t particularly love the city itself. Starting with the most obvious one, these are my top things to do in Amritsar…!

Eat at the Golden Temple Kitchen-Amritsar is 1 best city of Holiness

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-more-golden-temle-langarA wonderful experience in Amritsar is dining at the world’s biggest community kitchen which feeds 100,000 people a day. This is known as a langer to Sikhs. I loved this experience because it was so unique: we sat cross-legged on the floor with a delicious dinner and hundreds of locals doing the exact same thing. If you don’t know, caring for others is a big part of the Sikh religion. Community kitchens are a common theme in temples around the world. You won’t pay a penny for this meal which I think is so amazing.  I loved the efficiency of it all, including the water machines that pour into your cup without the staff having to bend down!

The Golden Temple evening ceremony, A delight of Amritsar

Amritsar 1 best city of Holiness City ,If you get the chance to visit the Golden Temple at night, I’d highly recommend it See the glimmering Golden Temple by night and witness the evening Palki Sahib ceremony in which the Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh holy book) is put away for the night with this tour.

Every evening the Guru Granth Sahib is transported from the main shrine to the inner sanctum on a gilded palanquin. the Palki Sahib ceremony sees the Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, get put to bed inside the temple.

Take a village tour near Amritsar

Before I’d even got off the plane in Amritsar, my seatmate had encouraged me to visit the surrounding villages and even invited me to his house! While the latter wasn’t on my itinerary as a solo female traveller, I have no doubt he was being genuinely hospitable.

While I didn’t make it to the villages in the end, I hear they’re very scenic. The state of Punjab is known as a friendly and safe place, though I would recommend travelling with a reputable tour agency.

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-more-village-tour-near-AmritsarYour accommodation can likely arrange a village tour for you, otherwise you can visit any tourist agency in the city centre. Alternatively, look up Incredible Amritsar’s village tour which I’ve heard good things about

Shopping & wandering the central square

Amritsar-1-best-city-of-Holiness-and-more-shoppingThe outer streets of Amritsar are busy, hectic and overwhelming. However, the central square near the Golden Temple feels modern and well-organised. It’s a nice place to wander with some impressive architecture. You can get some total bargains while shopping, especially with these gorgeous shoes which are famously from Punjab. There are also lots of stalls selling kulfi (milky frozen yoghurt) and lassis.

Where to eat in Amritsar

No Amritsar travel guide would be complete without the best foodie finds. Amritsar is sometimes referred to as the ‘secret foodie capital of India’ although whether this is just by the patriotic locals, I’m not sure. Still, there’s no denying that the food in Amritsar is seriously good. I hadn’t had a real Indian meal since my last trip 3.5 years ago so you can guarantee I was loving it… Until I got sick!

All the places I ate were fantastic –

Those were really very popular and busy – so I don’t know if my sickness even came from something I ate or perhaps some bacteria or water I came into contact with elsewhere. It’s just impossible to know! I still want to share my foodie finds with you as I don’t think any of these listed were the cause. But as usual, use your own judgement, too – it’s all too easy to get sick in India.

Go to watch the closing of the flag ceremony at the Wagah Border near Pakistan

This was an incredible spectacle that I would advise all tourists heading to Amritsar to watch. It’s on the border of Pakistan which is around 40 kilometres away from Amritsar.

Essentially, it’s a lowering of the flag ceremony where the army on both sides of the border meet in the middle and perform to the crowds. The army members will be spinning, kicking and marching to the applause. You will have to set off early (around 3pm) to make sure you get through the queues and get a seat. You will have to set off early (around 3pm) to make sure you get through the queues and get a seat.

What tourists experience here ?

The experience gives tourists (typically seated in a special VIP section, once they flash their foreign passport) the chance to see the stark differences between Pakistan and India. On the Pakistan side, you’ll see men and women sitting separately in stadium-style seating, and the vibe is much more subdued.

On the Indian side, however, it’s a patriotic party. Bollywood music blasts from speakers as women dance in the street, while those in the stands wave Indian flags.

While just 45-minutes long, the entire ceremony gives you enough memories for hours of storytelling back at home.

Best food in Amritsar:

A famous ‘kulcha’ breakfast – this thick bread dish is a bit like naan and served with butter, chickpeas and other flavoursome dips. Eat it at Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale for 80 rupees including chai.

Kesar De Dhaba – the most famous Punjab restaurant in Amritsar, hidden down a local alleyway. Order the Palak paneer!

Gurudas Ram Jalebi Wala – if you don’t know it already, jalebi is a deep-fried dough dessert served in sticky syrup. This street vendor is renowned after serving it for many years.

The world’s only vegetarian McDonalds – a random one but interesting nonetheless. You can find this restaurant in the main square.

Punjabi cuisine has become known around the world for its spicy curries, pillowy breads, and tandoori-fired meats. If you’re looking to indulge in this tradition of colourful feasts, there’s no better place to do it than in Amritsar.

True history of Indian Independence

A Hot cup of strong tea may solve my present Problem said Mr. Kumar while replying to Mr. Yusuf’s question of what exactly he can bargain me with telling him the Truth Of the Indian Independence, as a history of Patriots befitted by the Traitors while the masses never stood unanimously. Mr. Yusuf glittered while putting his hand on big white beard and said the deal is accepted. We moved forward to an open restaurant on Jhu,Choparti in Mumbai, I remember.

Indian-freedom-fighterThe month of August in Mumbai observes very heavy rain while we saw the clouds were gathering, I suppose they were interested to hear what Mr. Yusuf Dahodwalla, also wanted to hear. I clarified that the entire narration will be precise and, he may raise his query while I anxiously wanted to narrate it, as I always like to narrate the heroic history of Indian independence. It always bestows my feeling of Love to My Country, my Independence and I refresh my great martyrs with all dignity and respect and surely the innate love to them and lot many blessings to them and their family members.

Battle of Plassey, an initiation towards India’s subjugation.

battle-of-plasseyIt was battle of Plassey fought between Sirraj-ud-daulha’s Army and the East India company headed by Robert Clive on June 23rd, 1757. The proportion of the Army was of 1:10. Undoubtedly The emperor of Bengal had a very huge Army in comparison to the East India company. More importantly the Emperor was backed by his French allies, also.

Robert Clive bribed Mir Jaffar, uncle of the emperor and Chief of the Army and convinced him to betray the emperor on the battlefield to gain the crown of Bengal and luring wealth. Mir Jaffar was convinced and so he and betrayed his nephew and the Emperor.

Added to this was the rain on the very day of the battle due to which the uncovered cannons of the emperor misfired along with the elephants who did not respond, as they used to be in the battlefield. Result was the loss of the Emperor within 11 hours of battle and emergence of East India company with convincing hold on Bengal Province. Armenians helped Robert Clive in the war.

What was the reason of the battle of Plassey? Kumar Mr. Yusuf was frowning at me.

black-hole-of-calcuttaThe Black hole of Calcutta and rampant flourishing of the East India Company were the prime causes of the war. Black hole is an incident which occurred on 26th of July 1756, when Siraj-ud-daulha defeated the English Army and made them surrender thus captivating 70 Persons including a young Warren Hastings. 43 of the officers died during imprisonment due to suffocation. Which clive wanted to revenge while the emperor wanted to hold the rampage of the business flourishing of East India Company.

The result of the war was the coronation ceremony of Mir Jaffar as the emperor of the Bengal, while he was further used as a Puppet of the East India company. The draining of natural wealth and resources by the East India Company gallantly started .

Battle of Plassey was much more than a lost battle in terms of India’s subjugation-

The battle of Plassey was not only a lost battle but much more than that, Mr. Yusuf. I told him. It paved way or gave an Ideology to the Britishers to subjugate India. More convincingly when Robert Clive himself mentioned that while My soldiers and I were carrying victory procession, Indians collected on either side of the Road, to see us, They were clapping with both hands. I told Mr. Yusuf had they used those hands to throw stones, then the scene could have been altered in the prima-fascia, only.  Hence forth, I say that the masses never performed unanimously when they were ought too.

True history of India’s Independence.Learn Now.Likewise, the East India Company was able to grow its influence with a Policy named, “Divide and rule” until India was subjugated and finally become one of the “Colony” ruled by “His majesty’s Governance”. It was quiet pathetic on their part,

I am surprised that how come the masses could not foresee the steps taken by East India Company, Mr. Yusuf. Reverted, His voice was loud and seemed to be in anguish.

Not be shaken by the Truth, we are again repeating the History, while the scoundrel are managing to become the beholder of the Ministerial seat in many countries and the masses are yet not unanimously resenting them, by their deep rotted actions and taking various measures, in the interest of the Humanity.

What was the first bullet fired for Indian Independence, asked Mr Yusuf?

Many Patriots laid their life for their motherland, to get it independence. The Historians mark the rebellion of Mangal Pandey, as the initiating Point, followed by uprising of 1857, led by the war of Jhansi.

Guide-to-indian-tourismAt the Barrackpore ground near Kolkata, during afternoon time of 29 March 1857, Mangal Pandey attacked and injured his British sergeant and wounded an adjutant. Here it is interesting to note that Pandey called his fellow person for revolt but one of his colleagues guided the two British officer from being killed by Pandey. Pandey was further hanged on 8th of April, 1857.

Yet another example, Mr. Yusuf, which convinces that the masses never reacted for the common cause when they were ought too.

What was the first major war fought for ,Indian Independence. Mr Yusuf desperately asked me ?

The historians claim the Rebellion of 1857 as the first war of Independence fought by the Indians. Some part of the Northern India along with parts of Orrisa and Assam. along with many leaders were responsible for its widespread. Some of the eminent may be named as –

Delhi- Bahadur Shah II, General Bakht Khan. Lucknow- Begum Hazrat Mahal, Birjis Qadir, Ahmadullah. Kanpur- Nana Sahib, Rao Sahib, Tantia Tope, Azimullah Khan. Jhansi- Rani Laxmibaib, Bihar Kunwar Singh, Amar Singh. Rajasthan- Jaidayal Singh and Hardayal Singh. Farrukhabad- Tufzal Hasan Khan. Assam- Kandapareshwar Singh, Maniram Dutta Baruah. Orissa- Surendra Shahi, Ujjwal Shahi.

Know more about the History of Northern India .

What was the immediate reason which saw India United to some extent for Indian Independence? Mr. Yusuf eagerly asked me.

Undoubtedly the main was the contamination of the cartridges used by the newly introduced Enfield rifles. Whose cartridges were greased by the Pork or Cow beef. Furthermore, they were to be bitten by mouth before use. This called for a social injustice to Hindus and Muslims in the British Army, Who finally revolted on 10th May, 1857?

True history of India’s Independence.Learn Now.Other dominant causes were the introduction of new peasants Policy, religious discrimination etc. Which further united Indians to fight for there cause. Rani Laxmi Bai’s war during this period further weakened the Status of the East India Company.

However, this mutiny could not unite the entire India, rulers like Scindia and others opposed the rebellion while the Sikh didn’t took active Part. Moreover, the Bengal and the southern India remain unaffected and this resulted in the failure of the First Rebellion.

Most Importantly, this introduced the British Governance in the name British India rule of under” His majesty”. And thus, the enactment of Indian Government Act.

Learn More about the History of South India.

What about the Indian National Congress and its role in Indian Independence, Mr. Yusuf Inquired me?

Indian congress has a very vital stand in the History of Indian Independence. Retired British Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer Allan Octavian Hume founded the Indian National Congress (A political Party) The objective was Free India and also to provide a platform for civil and political dialogue among educated Indians.

Congress become the mouth of the Indian masses, more importantly when a learned lawyer, in the name of Mohan das Karamchand Gandhi took the leadership in his hands.

This further become potent with the ideologies and coming of Subash Chandra Bose. “Bose”, the tile was given to Mr. Subash, by the Indian Military Personals posted in Germany.

Then what about Chandrashekar Azad, Bhagat singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Ashfakhullha and so on, and their role as a patriot, Mr. Yusuf asked me?

freedom-fighters-of-indiaThe name you asked are the real proud of the Indians, and they are many. Mr. Yusuf, Indians wanted independence, but they were hardly able to unite for their own reasons. Some feared for their bread and butter while the others didn’t have the courage while very few enjoyed being the Puppet of the British India governance.

The two basic ideologies emerged to free India. One was headed by Mahatma Gandhi, which was based on nonviolent movement while the other was of those who believed in rebellion, some term as extremists to them, which I do not agree with.

The martyrs believed that without indictment of fear in Britishers, the Independence couldn’t be achieved. Hence, they kept on looting the trains, bombarding or assassinating British officers, irrespective of the fear of losing their Lives. Their message was loud and clear. They further believed that either they will be able to induce fear, or their death will help in surging the masses to unite for a common cause which otherwise was seemingly unable to unite.

It was only after the hanging of Bhagat singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev that the masses got infuriated and the time saw the Indian masses inception to unity for common cause of freedom.

What led India to gain the Indian Independence than, asked Mr. Yusuf?

The contemporary conditions., I answered him. The advent of the world war forced the British Governance to urge the Congress and the Muslim League to help them for not restraining the Indians to participate in the world war-2. To which the leaders agreed on the note that the British Indian Government will be providing the Independence to India.

Furthermore, the inspirational speeches of Subhash Chandra Bose making the Indians realise their Army skill draw a fear of rebellion in the Britishers. Aided to this were the relentless increasing insurgence in the Indian mass to get permanent Freedom. Furthermore, the Post world war saw the weakening of the British governance and the emergence of new world powers i.e. United states Of America and United states of Soviet Republic. USA envisaged India’s independence and manifested for the same by the British Indian Governance.

Hence Lord Mountbatten declared Indian Independence on the midnight of 14-15 August 1947. Learn more about Indian Independence, a true celebration.

Which indicates for a partial freedom and realisation of commonwealth where the sovereign is headed by “His Majesty “, I replied him authoritatively.

Facts of India Independence day –

What did Tilaks Swaraj meant?

India’s Independence and relevant inspiring factsTilak was a person of High moral character and the believer of the Vedenta. The word, swaraj was deciphered and drawn from Indian Vedas. Its spiritual meaning is attainment of self-realisation. Where a person works for the betterment of the world without involving his personal gains. The ideology of Mr. Tilak can be understood from his various quotes. One of the relevant quotes –

To quote him, “If man seeks unity with the Deity, he must necessarily seek unity with the interests of the world also, and work for it. If he does not, then the unity is not perfect, because there is union between two elements out of the 3 (man and Deity) and the third (the world) is left out. I have thus solved the question for myself and I hold that serving the world, and thus serving His will, is the surest way of Salvation, and this way can be followed by remaining in the world and no going away from it.”

Did India Got Total Independence or “Puran Swaraj”on 15th August 1947 ?

guide-to-indian-tourismThe India got its Independence on 15th August 1947, in the midnight of 14th and 15th of August, 1947. The independence can be termed as a partial independence but not the total One. It was basically transfer of Powers by the orders of,” His Majesty’

India’s Independence and relevant inspiring facts

Clement Attlee, the Contemporary Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, on 20th February 1947 announced that the British Government would grant Full Self- Government to British India, by 30th June 1948, at the latest. He furthermore added that the future of the princely states was to be decided further after the self- independence of India.

It was the prerogative of the British Government to transfer the Powers in the safe hands, whom they recognised to be the safest. For the Governance of Republic of India.  Thus, the Congress was selected by the British government. For the transfer of Power, Pandit Nehru and Mhd Jinnha signed the declarations and the relevant papers with Lord Mountbatten.

Inspiring Relevant Facts of India Independence day-

Republic of India, a Dominion State after 15th August 1947.

India’s Independence and relevant inspiring factsRepublic of India was thus recognised as Dominion of the British Government. This also paved way to India’s Participation like other colonial subjugates of the Britishers, to participate in Commonwealth Games. The commonwealth games are organised and played among the British subjugate who still realise that they are Dominion of the British Governance.

India, hence due to its ‘Dominion’ status, can be termed of having partial independence only granted for not less than 99 years, from the date of granted Dominion, “within the British Empire”. Furthermore, these Dominions are required to remain within commonwealth and recognise His Majesty’s, sovereign governance, as the head of the commonwealth, also.

HENCE INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE SEEMS NOT PRUDENT ENOUGH TILL IT REFORMS THE CONSTITUTION AS DID CANADA, TO STOP BEING A DOMINION.

Dominant facts which Advocate DOMINION Status of India-

The Prevalent Judiciary system, various laws, including that Labor law, Contract law, land laws, Taxation laws etc. Clearly mark their recognition of British India Era, but which are unfortunately dictated in today’s India, also. Same is that with the reputed IPS and IAS exams and the Indian Penal Code and related Policing culture of India. These further inherit a strong conviction of the DOMINION status of India and India still following the guidelines of the British constitution.

Hence the claim of the Indian Independence on 15th August 1947 seems weird.

India’s Independence considering the contemporary World order and condition-

guide-to-indian-tourismLord Mountbatten Convinced Mr. Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee for transferring Power to the Indian Governance, on midnight of 14-15th August 1947. He maintained that it was after the world war and due to the surging belief of Indian masses on Subash Chandra Bose’s policy, that masses of India may cause rebellion.

Undoubtedly the weakening of the British Power after the world war-2, the advocacy of the United States of America to make Britishers leave colonial rule in India and emergence of USA AND USSR , as new powers, after Post world war-2 Period furthermore positioned India’s demand of self-governance.

Most importantly the Prime minister Mr. Clement Atlee was very quick and clear to mention that he wanted Lord Mountbatten to make sure that the Britishers are safely drawn out from the misadventures position likely to be cause mass massacre during the partition of Bharat to Republic of India and Islamic republic of Pakistan.

In addition Mountbatten also wanted to designate himself the highest Post of Navvy which was otherwise vacant after his father’s retirement. And Probably he was in Haste, also.

India’s Independence considering Astrology-

guide-to-indian-tourismLord Mountbatten was very clear that 15TH August 1947 was very inauspicious day for the masses of India. While 15th August was very much lucky for him as he made Japanese Army to surrender, in 1945 during world war 2.

Many Astrologers from India requested him to postpone the date. They further advocated that the India, if given the independence of this very time and date will face floods, draughts, communal riots, and will remain perturbed by one or the other reason, but he convinced the governance of his majesty, to grant Independence to Republic of India.

To conclude

Finally India was granted Independence on midnight of 14-15th August, 1947 and since than Indians celebrate Independence hardly caring about the facts behind the independence because they hardly upkeep what will British governance do with those piece of paper, termed as documents regarding  transfer of power against the blistering Indians who will till than acquire all power and courage to face the challenges, if any one calls them for yet another subjugation.
