We decided to visit places like artillery museum (Deolali), Veer Savarkar smarak at Bhagur (Birthplace of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar), Gargoti mineral museum, Sinnar and Gondeshwar Temple at Sinnar. Our first destination was the artillery museum. Due to national holiday, the Museum was closed but they allow us to see the artillery, which is kept for display in open ground. The museum is located in Army camp from Deolali.

There are old artillery weapons, Tanks, canons and Aircraft displayed in open ground. The museum building was closed due to holiday. Detailed information is available for each artillery.

Post artillery museum visit, we went to Veer Savarkar smarak. It is the birthplace of great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. House has resorted and now converted into a museum. You are allowed to roam in the house. Volunteer/Caretaker of property explains to us about the place.

We spend some time inside the house for meditation. There are books on Veer Savarkar available for sell.

Our journey begins towards Pune. We took a small detour to Sinnar for Gargoti Museum. It is one of the biggest private mineral collection. This museum has a collection of beautiful natural mineral and gem found in India. The museum has two-floor, which divides the collection into Deccan plateau collection and Prestige Gallery. Deccan plateau gallery displays mineral and crystals collected from Maharashtra and nearby Maharashtra state.

Prestige gallery contains a collection of exclusive and rare collection from India and around the world. They have rocks from Moon and Mars as well as fossils. A guide from Museum gives you detail information about the huge collection. There is one shop where you can buy a few crystal, Gems and ornaments. It required more than an hour to see the entire museum.

Hello beautiful blogs readers, today I am Matheran where we are going to explore every corner and every inch of this place now lets begin with Top places to visit in MATHERAN.

Matheran is a hill station and a municipal council in Karjat Tahsil in the Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Matheran is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Matheran is one of the smallest hill stations in India.

It is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is about 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. Matheran’s proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a weekend getaway for urban residents. Matheran, which means “forest on the forehead” (of the mountains) is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.

There are around 38 designated look-out “points” (viewpoints) in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. Louisa Point has views of Prabal Fort. Other viewpoints include One Tree Hill Point, Heart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, and Rambagh Point.

There are many hotels and Parsi bungalows in the area. Old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. The roads are not metalled and are made of red laterite earth.

Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is the birthplace of freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a Barber family.

The state government has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India’s other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra.

Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.

The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. Domesticated horses for riding are also in large numbers and are one of the symbols of Matheran.

Inside the forest animals like barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, fox, wild boar, mongoose may be found. But these animals are rare in numbers compared to monkeys and usually do not venture where humans are present. So most likely one does not come across them. There have been reports of leopard sightings in Matheran few times in last decade.

Leopards are not known to dwell in Matheran. But due to dense forests in valleys surrounding Matheran leopards who are on the roam may climb Matheran.

Nowadays leopard sightings by locals are extremely rare due to dwindling leopard population in general all over the country. There has been no known incidence of leopard attacks in Matheran.

Matheran is well connected to Mumbai (100 km) & Pune (120 km) by rail and road, while Neral is the nearest rail station. The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai that is located around 100 km away from Matheran.

Railway– Matheran has a narrow-gauge railway station in the town centre. The old Matheran Hill Railway offers several daily trains to Neral. The toy train connected to the mainline rail route at Neral Junction. Neral Junction is well connected by local trains from CST along the CST-Karjat route.

The train covers a distance of 12 miles in an hour.

Any Pune bound train from CST (Mumbai) reaches Neral in approximately two hours. To get there you have to take train from Mumbai to Neral junction; from Neral to Matheran by narrow gauge trains that depart at 8:40 AM, 11:00 AM, 5:00 PM. The Matheran Light Railway (MLR) offers limited seats for each trip. You can even hire a local van to travel till the Dhindi Point.

From Dhindi Point you have to walk for about 30 minutes along the railway track to reach Matheran. People who cannot walk are suggested to contact the Neral railway officials to check whether the toy train is operating or not.

The Toy train was shut down for most part 2016–2017. But it is now operational since January 26, 2018 and was e-inaugurated by the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. Only 1 Ride from Neral to Matheran and it leaves Neral at 6:40 AM and reaches Matheran around 9:40 AM. Thereafter it operates shuttle rides between Aman Lodge and Matheran Station on hourly basis and at 3:30 PM it returns to Neral from Matheran. It takes 2 hours to Travel for return journey

2) Buses–

There is regular bus service from Neral railway station and Karjat railway station up to Aman Lodge. The buses and cars are allowed only up to Aman Lodge. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed in Matheran.

3) Horses-

Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. In Matheran horses are the cheap and best mode of transport. Because of landslides during the rain fall, the toy train services may be terminated temporarily.

4)Other–

It was a lazy Sunday morning. I woke up around 10 am, brushed my teeth, had breakfast and went off to bed again. Few minutes later, my cell phone rang. I answered the call. It was my friend Parinita from Guwahati, Assam. She said, “Hey Ruchi, How you doing?” and I replied, “I’m doing well. How are you?” and she replied, “I am good too. I’m visiting Mumbai on 20th June, 2012. I want you to take me through the streets of Mumbai. I have heard a lot about it but never got a chance to visit Mumbai.” And I replied, “You are most welcome. Definitely, will show you the Sapno ki Nagri Mumbai and am sure after you walk on the streets of Mumbai, you will definitely visit Mumbai frequently.” And she replied, “(Laughs) Thanks. Buh Bye. “And with this our conversation ended.

Day 1– First, we took a cab to get to Charni Road station.

From there we travelled in the train to reach our destination Bandra.

Mumbai is incomplete without the local trains. Parinita was surprised to see the crowd. We soon reached Bandra. From there we took an auto for Elco Market. She shopped from the streets of Bandra. She said, “OMG! What cool and cheap stuff you get here. Why would one go to a mall to shop when one gets everything on the streets?” and I replied, “Yea, it’s cool. I shop from these streets only. Good for college going students like us.”

After she was done with her shopping, we went for lunch to Madras Cafe, Matunga to munch on Idli’s. It’s one of the best South India home in Mumbai. She loved the food out there. She went on munching. She said, “Ruchi, I never liked the South Indian food. But today, I just can’t stop munching on these Idli’s. I love you for bringing me here.” And I smiled at her.

Soon after that, we left for Worli. I decided to show her the Haji Ali Dargah and the Japanese graves which many mumbaikars are not aware of. We first visited the Haji Ali Dargah.

She was surprised to see that it was located in the middle of Worli Bay and the concrete footpath that runs to this holy place. In addition, she was surprised to notice that every day 1000 of Indians visit different holy places.After we reached the end of Marine Drive, we saw Victoria. We decided to take a ride. It cost us Rs. 150 for 5-7 minute ride. Super Expensive! But the ride was fun. It reminded us of that old era, when there were no vehicles except horse carts.

Our first day of journey to discover Mumbai ended well. The whole day was well spent. Parinita was very happy. When we reached home, she just couldn’t stop talking about Mumbai (the places we visited) to her parents. I was happy to notice that she really did enjoy discovering Mumbai.

Day 2: Today, it was our second day to discover Mumbai. Our first destination was to visit the Chinese Temple, Byculla, generally known as Kwan Tai Kon. We thought it would be a good idea to begin our day by worshipping a holy place. Usually, worshippers come during Chinese New Year to visit the temple.

Next we went to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. I took her there, because I wanted her to notice the ancient architecture which is influenced from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and Indian (Mughal and Hindu), which was built-in 1887. She did not enjoy watching the heritage building because she was not interested in the history and architecture. We hardly stood there for 10 minutes.

Later we decided we shall visit The RBI Monetary Museum, Fort and increase our knowledge about it. The museum is divided into 6 sections. Section 1: Concepts, Curiosities & the Idea of Money. This section is about the definition of money and gives information on its evolution. Section 2: Indian Coinage. This section displays coins through a time line right from 6-4 century B.C. to those of Independent India. Section 3: Coins to Bank Notes.

This section is about the transition of coins to Bank Notes. Section 4 is about Indian Paper Money. This section is about the display also includes representative notes of the Princely States and a collection of exigent money. Section 5: Know Your Currency. This section is about how currency is managed in India and the features of the contemporary Mahatma Gandhi Series of notes and the last Section 6: RBI and You.

This section is about everything one wants to know about the RBI and doesn’t know whom to ask. Visiting the museum was the best part of the day. We got to learn a lot of things about the RBI Monetary

After filling our stomachs, I took her for the tour of Gateway of India built-in 1911. The journey to discover Mumbai is incomplete without the tour of Gateway of India.
