 We decided to visit places like artillery museum (Deolali), Veer Savarkar smarak at Bhagur (Birthplace of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar), Gargoti mineral museum, Sinnar and Gondeshwar Temple at Sinnar. Our first destination was the artillery museum. Due to national holiday, the Museum was closed but they allow us to see the artillery, which is kept for display in open ground. The museum is located in Army camp from Deolali. 

There are old artillery weapons, Tanks, canons and Aircraft displayed in open ground. The museum building was closed due to holiday. Detailed information is available for each artillery.

 Post artillery museum visit, we went to Veer Savarkar smarak. It is the birthplace of great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. House has resorted and now converted into a museum. You are allowed to roam in the house. Volunteer/Caretaker of property explains to us about the place.

 We spend some time inside the house for meditation. There are books on Veer Savarkar available for sell.

Our journey begins towards Pune. We took a small detour to Sinnar for Gargoti Museum. It is one of the biggest private mineral collection. This museum has a collection of beautiful natural mineral and gem found in India. The museum has two-floor, which divides the collection into Deccan plateau collection and Prestige Gallery. Deccan plateau gallery displays mineral and crystals collected from Maharashtra and nearby Maharashtra state. 

Prestige gallery contains a collection of exclusive and rare collection from India and around the world. They have rocks from Moon and Mars as well as fossils. A guide from Museum gives you detail information about the huge collection. There is one shop where you can buy a few crystal, Gems and ornaments. It required more than an hour to see the entire museum.

Hello beautiful blogs readers, today I am Matheran where we are going to explore every corner and every inch of this place now lets begin with Top places to visit in MATHERAN.

Matheran is a hill station and a municipal council in Karjat Tahsil in the Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Matheran is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Matheran is one of the smallest hill stations in India. 

It is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is about 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. Matheran’s proximity to many metropolitan cities makes it a weekend getaway for urban residents. Matheran, which means “forest on the forehead” (of the mountains) is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station.

There are around 38 designated look-out “points” (viewpoints) in Matheran, including the Panorama Point that provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. Louisa Point has views of Prabal Fort. Other viewpoints include One Tree Hill Point, Heart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, and Rambagh Point. 

There are many hotels and Parsi bungalows in the area. Old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. The roads are not metalled and are made of red laterite earth.

Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is the birthplace of freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a Barber family.

 The state government has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India’s other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra.

Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.

The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. Domesticated horses for riding are also in large numbers and are one of the symbols of Matheran.

But these animals are rare in numbers compared to monkeys and usually do not venture where humans are present. So most likely one does not come across them. Matheran is well connected to Mumbai (100 km) & Pune (120 km) by rail and road, while Neral is the nearest rail station. The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai that is located around 100 km away from Matheran.

Railway– Matheran has a narrow-gauge railway station in the town centre. The old Matheran Hill Railway offers several daily trains to Neral. The toy train connected to the mainline rail route at Neral Junction. Neral Junction is well connected by local trains from CST along the CST-Karjat route.

The train covers a distance of 12 miles in an hour. 

Any Pune bound train from CST (Mumbai) reaches Neral in approximately two hours. To get there you have to take train from Mumbai to Neral junction; from Neral to Matheran by narrow gauge trains that depart at 8:40 AM, 11:00 AM, 5:00 PM. The Matheran Light Railway (MLR) offers limited seats for each trip. You can even hire a local van to travel till the Dhindi Point. 

From Dhindi Point you have to walk for about 30 minutes along the railway track to reach Matheran. People who cannot walk are suggested to contact the Neral railway officials to check whether the toy train is operating or not. 

The Toy train was shut down for most part 2016–2017. But it is now operational since January 26, 2018 and was e-inaugurated by the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. Only 1 Ride from Neral to Matheran and it leaves Neral at 6:40 AM and reaches Matheran around 9:40 AM. Thereafter it operates shuttle rides between Aman Lodge and Matheran Station on hourly basis and at 3:30 PM it returns to Neral from Matheran. It takes 2 hours to Travel for return journey

2) Buses–

There is regular bus service from Neral railway station and Karjat railway station up to Aman Lodge. The buses and cars are allowed only up to Aman Lodge. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed in Matheran.

3) Horses- 

Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. In Matheran horses are the cheap and best mode of transport. Because of landslides during the rain fall, the toy train services may be terminated temporarily.

4)Other–

The centre has also given moot for e-rickshaws in Matheran

The forest type of Matheran is semi evergreen forests.[5] The trees are evergreen, making the plateau forests very dense and even congested in places.

Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. Matheran was declared an Eco-Sensitive zone (ESZ) by the Union Environment Ministry on 4 February 2003[7] and can be called a health sanatorium in itself. The declaration as ESZ has led to the stoppage of developmental activities and construction of hazardous industries.

It was a lazy Sunday morning. I woke up around 10 am, brushed my teeth, had breakfast and went off to bed again. Few minutes later, my cell phone rang. I answered the call. It was my friend Parinita from Guwahati, Assam. She said, “Hey Ruchi, How you doing?” and I replied, “I’m doing well. How are you?” and she replied, “I am good too. I’m visiting Mumbai on 20th June, 2012. I want you to take me through the streets of Mumbai. I have heard a lot about it but never got a chance to visit Mumbai.” And I replied, “You are most welcome. Definitely, will show you the Sapno ki Nagri Mumbai and am sure after you walk on the streets of Mumbai, you will definitely visit Mumbai frequently.” And she replied, “(Laughs) Thanks. Buh Bye. “And with this our conversation ended.

Day 1– First, we took a cab to get to Charni Road station.

From there we travelled in the train to reach our destination Bandra.

Mumbai is incomplete without the local trains. Parinita was surprised to see the crowd.  We soon reached Bandra. From there we took an auto for Elco Market. She shopped from the streets of Bandra. She said, “OMG! What cool and cheap stuff you get here. Why would one go to a mall to shop when one gets everything on the streets?” and I replied, “Yea, it’s cool. I shop from these streets only. Good for college going students like us.”

After she was done with her shopping, we went for lunch to Madras Cafe, Matunga to munch on Idli’s. It’s one of the best South India home in Mumbai. She loved the food out there. She went on munching. She said, “Ruchi, I never liked the South Indian food. But today, I just can’t stop munching on these Idli’s. I love you for bringing me here.” And I smiled at her.

Soon after that, we left for Worli. I decided to show her the Haji Ali Dargah and the Japanese graves which many mumbaikars are not aware of. We first visited the Haji Ali Dargah.

She was surprised to see that it was located in the middle of Worli Bay and the concrete footpath that runs to this holy place. In addition, she was surprised to notice that every day 1000 of Indians visit different holy places.After we reached the end of Marine Drive, we saw Victoria. We decided to take a ride. It cost us Rs. 150 for 5-7 minute ride. Super Expensive! But the ride was fun. It reminded us of that old era, when there were no vehicles except horse carts.

Our first day of journey to discover Mumbai ended well. The whole day was well spent. Parinita was very happy. When we reached home, she just couldn’t stop talking about Mumbai (the places we visited) to her parents.  I was happy to notice that she really did enjoy discovering Mumbai.

Day 2:  Today, it was our second day to discover Mumbai. Our first destination was to visit the Chinese Temple, Byculla, generally known as Kwan Tai Kon. We thought it would be a good idea to begin our day by worshipping a holy place. Usually, worshippers come during Chinese New Year to visit the temple.

Next we went to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. I took her there, because I wanted her to notice the ancient architecture which is influenced from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and Indian (Mughal and Hindu), which was built-in 1887. She did not enjoy watching the heritage building because she was not interested in the history and architecture. We hardly stood there for 10 minutes.

Later we decided we shall visit The RBI Monetary Museum, Fort and increase our knowledge about it. The museum is divided into 6 sections. Section 1: Concepts, Curiosities & the Idea of Money. This section is about the definition of money and gives information on its evolution. Section 2: Indian Coinage. This section displays coins through a time line right from 6-4 century B.C. to those of Independent India. Section 3: Coins to Bank Notes. 

This section is about the transition of coins to Bank Notes. Section 4 is about Indian Paper Money. This section is about the display also includes representative notes of the Princely States and a collection of exigent money. Section 5: Know Your Currency. This section is about how currency is managed in India and the features of the contemporary Mahatma Gandhi Series of notes and the last Section 6: RBI and You.

 This section is about everything one wants to know about the RBI and doesn’t know whom to ask. Visiting the museum was the best part of the day. We got to learn a lot of things about the RBI Monetary

After filling our stomachs, I took her  for the tour of Gateway of India built-in 1911.  The journey to discover Mumbai is incomplete without the tour of Gateway of India.

Shell Museum in Diu is a rare structure showcasing a collection of rare and unique sea shells from around the world. Diu Island and its surrounding attractions are known to provide a lifetime experience through their exquisite beauty and uniqueness per se. Before there was a Shell Museum, there were the shell collectors. They were passionate about this special place—Sanibel Island, one of the best shell-collecting spots in the world. They dreamed of establishing a museum dedicated entirely to shells and the environmental importance of mollusks, the animals that create them.

In 1989, three local brothers, Francis, Samuel, and John Bailey, generously deeded eight acres of wetland on Sanibel Captiva Road to the Museum. They used the gift to memorialize their parents, Frank P. Bailey and Annie Mead Matthews, whose names the Museum now bears.

Diu Museum – A Restored Church from the pages of Best Places to visit in DIU Island

This edifice came under various functions like an Orphanage, Old Age Home, Police Station and prior to liberation, it housed the Angolan Battalion. Post-liberation, it was abandoned for many years. Later in 1992, the church was converted into a museum.

Has a very old collection of wooden Catholic saints going back to the 16thC. Once a year, on All Saints Day, it is used for Mass. The place would barely make the cut as a museum as it is very small place which used to be a church. The place itself is in ruins with wall paint information. Just to point out it is next to St Paul Church, which tourists visit, so everyone scraped at multiple places and birds making it their home. It has some 30 wooden statues with just the names for the just visits the museum as well.

The Diu Museum is among the most famous Diu tourist places and is a part of the St. Thomas Church which was converted into a museum shortly after it was built in 1598. While the museum part is relatively new and well-kept, the church area has been allowed to restore its former glory and ancient look. 

You’ll find that the building bears a worn out look and has faded portraits and paintings that the Portuguese had left behind. You’ll also be mesmerised by the beautiful garden path that leads up to the museum, one of the most attractive places to see in Diu.

INS Khukri Memorial – Plunge into The History

Indian Naval Ship Khukri was a frigate of the Indian Navy. During the Indo Pak War in 1971, she fell prey to three torpedoes fired by a Pakistan submarine on 9/12/1971 and sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu taking down with her a crew of 18 Officers and 176 Sailors.

There is a memorial to the sailors in Diu. The memorial consists of a scale model of Khukri encased in a glass house, placed atop a hillock facing the sea.

INS Khukri Memorial is a monument built commemorating the INS Khukri that sunk during the 1971 war between Pakistan and India. The submarine was shot with torpedoes and started to sink when the 18 officers and 176 sailors on it were issued the orders to save their lives and hand them over to the invaders. However, the officers chose to embrace death rather than surrendering to the enemies.

 Later the commanding officer Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla was awarded Mahavir Chakra posthumously. The monument stands till date a reminder of the valiant soldiers, and is visited by many tourists every year.

Diu Fort – Must-Visit Place from the pages of Best Places to visit in DIU Island

The fortress, which borders on the town of Diu, was built in 1535 subsequent to a defense alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor attempted to annex this territory. It was strengthened over the years, till 1546.

Fort Diu is located right beside the sea or on the sea shore and is one of the most iconic places to visit in Diu. You can enjoy a surreal view of the horizons from the fort and hear the crashing sea waves on the fort walls sending foam to its upper reaches! The lighthouse is closed to the public. The fort was built by the Portuguese people and its jetty is still in use. 

The fort was once an important entity on the trade route with Cambay, Surat and Bharuch in Gujarat. The parapet has an array of cannons and cannonballs are littered around the entire land surrounding the fort.

Pani Kotta 

Pani Kotha is a structure dating back to the 12th century that is bang in the middle of the sea without any landmass connecting to it and can be viewed from the Fort Diu near the India Union Territory of Diu which is a set of islands. Built by the Portuguese colonial forces that invaded Goa and many other parts of coastal India, the Pani Kotha as it is referred to by locals, was an isolated complex structure built in the middle of the sea to house prisoners. 

The Portuguese had named it Fortim du Mar and it was built in the shape of a towering fortress with no windows and a single entrance and it used to be a massive spiralling prison reservoir in those days.

Pani Kotha or Fortim do Mar as named by the Portuguese is a 12th-century edifice. Once a fort it was made to look like a ship to mislead invaders. Since it is located on an islet at the mouth of the creek of the Arabian sea, now it is a historical monument and one of the top tourist places in Diu.

The fort was later used as a prison and was controlled by the Portuguese along with the Diu fort. This stone fort was fortified in the year 1588 by adding a few structures. Besides this, a small chapel was erected in the year 1638 as a dedication to Our Lady of the Sea. 

The fort also houses barracks, a warehouse and a lighthouse from where you get a panoramic view of the Diu fort, jetty and even the Ghogla village. One sight to behold is the colourful lights projected at the fort along with the music as part of a light and sound event is magnificent.

The Battle of Diu (1509), was the culmination of a global trade war. On one side were allied forces of the Sultanate of Gujarat, the Zamorin of Calicut, the Egyptians, and the Venetians, the ‘old’ order and on the other, the Portuguese. The decisive victory of the Portuguese in this naval battle heralded the end of the old trading giants and led to centuries of European naval and trade dominance, that shaped the modern world.

McLeod Ganj:

 It is about 9 kms. from Dharamkot. This place is known as Upper Dharamsala and is the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government – in –exile. There are beautiful colonial houses of the British era and a church which is the resting place of Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India who liked the place. He died while on tour of this place. There are some beautiful monasteries and famous ancient temples in the area. There is a Museum on Tibetan culture, art and crafts within the Tsuglagkhang Complex where the Dalai Lama resides. There are forts within the area. Most of them are in ruins after the devastating earthquake in 1905.

Triund:  

his small hamlet lies at the base of the majestic Dauladhar range of mountains and is a haven for trekkers. There is an old trail through this place used by the Gaddi shepherds of the Chamba Valley. Triund is 2842 metres above sea level. Triund is on an altitude immediately below the snow line that starts at Illaqa and perhaps this is the only place in the world with a majestic view of the Himalayan ranges.

Galu Devi Temple:

is at an altitude of 2130 metres. There is a small shrine and is a watering hole for the trekkers.

Dharamsala:

This place is around 11 kms. from Dharamkot. This place is divided in to two:The Upper Dharamsala or McLeodganj and Lower Dharamsala which houses the Indian Government offices and quarters.

Masroor Rock Temple:

There are fifteen temples that have been chiseled out of sedimentary rocks. It is believed that these temples were built during the time of Pandavas while in exile.

Kangra Fort: 

loot that was found in the wells. Jehangir too played a part in destroying the fort. Historians have stated that if a fort is successfully conquered, it was to be assured that the fort or palace was also completely ransacked and burned or destroyed by the invader.

Devi Himani Chamunda: 

Situated at an altitude of 10500 feet above sea level, this temple can be visited only by mid-March to early November after which, the temple will be closed due to freezing winter. There are two other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman.

Bhagsunag Shiv Mandir and Bhagsunag Waterfalls:

The legend is that when King Bhagsu, the demon king ruled with his capital at Ajmer during the Thretha yug, there was a severe drought in the capital. The people of Ajmer beseeched him to provide water. 

The king being an Asura (Demon) could use his magical powers to draw all the water from the Lake Nag Dal. On his way back with the magical pot containing the entire water from the lake, he fell tired and went to sleep in a glade. The Nag Devta on his visit to the lake found the lake empty and was furious of the deed. He traced the footsteps to the Asura King and when the king refused to part with the water, the Nag Devta challenged the king to a duel. In the ensuing duel, the king was mortally wounded and requested the Nag Devta to ensure that water be provided to his people as a boon. 

This was granted and water continues to flow. The place came to be known as Bhagsunag, a derivation of both the names. Years later, in the beginning of the Kali Yug, King Dharamchand ruled this place and one night he had a vision of Lord Shiva asking him to build a temple at the place. The temple is believed to be 5080 years old.

Triund is four hours hike away from Dharamkot. I recommend you start this hike very early in the morning and camp at Triund at night. Vegan Food in Blue Caterpillar and Once in Nature

To continue my talk about the awesome food in this area, I must mention how presently surprised we were to discover a few Vegan cafes in this village. The most famous one is towards the other side of the village, on the way to Bhagsu near the rocks. It’s very easy to find this because you will find many rocks with “Vegan Café” painted on them and they will lead you to this place.

When we visited, there was live trance music and a few traveling artists with their work on display. There were a few other vegan cafes around as well. Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the most popular and easiest treks in Himachal Pradesh. Every year lot of trekkers and tourists hike this astonishingly beautiful trek. Triund is at an altitude of about 2,827 m in Kangra valley. It is around 8 km trek from Dharamkot starting from the Gallu Devi temple where people going for trek register their names. The reason this peak called Triund is because you can visually perceive three snow-capped mountains Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal, and Mani Mahesh Kailash.

Triund trek will take around 4 hours to complete. You will experience an enthralling view of the Dhauladhar range & the Kangra valley, the pristine snow glittering in the sunlight, and exploration of the forest amidst pine and oak trees that make any trip to the mountains so special. At the top you can rent a tent or install your own I highly recommend staying at Triund for one night to enjoy adorable sunrise in the early morning.

Those who are in love with trekking can additionally visit Snowline that is a 2-3 hour trek from Triund. It is conventionally a stop for those wanting to go further up to Laka Glacier & Indrahar Pass trek. Walking on the snowline and reaching to the Laka Glacier- all filled with snow & ice that will give you spectacular and freezing views of the place.

Unlike the famous but crowded Bhagsu waterfall that has the same distance from Dharamkot & Mcleodganj, No Name Waterfall is less kenned hence it is quite a peaceful place to enjoy hiking & water. It is about a 1-hour trek from Daharmkot in the same way as Triund trek near a village called Gallu. The view of the waterfall made it all worth the trek. It is virtually hidden by stone boulders and the curves of the hills. You can enjoy your time by dipping your feet in the ice-cold water and absorbing nature’s beauty. You can additionally enjoy some snacks or refreshments at Sunset Cafe near Gallu village.

Strangely, lasagnas, pasta, pancakes, and hummus taste superior to Indian food. It has many places to eat but Trek N Dine, Morgan’s café, and Bodhi Green café are my personal favorites. You will simply never have a bad meal here.

Trek N Dine has great ambiance and accommodates high-quality food. The rooftop terrace of Mrgan’s cafe has the most glorious view of the mountains. Bodhi Green is the organic vegan cafe that serves the best vegan food made with dress ingredients. Bhagsu cake is the most amazing dessert to eat in this area that has crunchy pie crust, layered with sticky caramel sauce, and topped with dark chocolate or white chocolate. Overall I can verbalize you fall in love with the food in Dharamkot.

If you like drinking light alcohol, you can try some of the few Himalayan fruit wines and apple cedar which you will easily find in the grocery shops for INR 200 – 300. My favorite was the peach wine but the shopkeeper insisted I try Kiwi as well which was the highest selling. Everything herbal is available in plenty so if you want, you can skip alchohol altogether.

Dharamkot is a quaint traditional Himachali village. Initially, there was a limited option to stay in Dharamkot. But now there are plenty of homestays, budget hotels, and few backpackers hostels too. Dharamkot hotels or stay options have boomed up in the recent past because the place is quite famous for foreign travelers, backpackers, and spiritual seekers.

Booking in advance is recommended because searching for a room can mean a lot of walking up & down and in peak season it can be difficult to find a room at all. If you arrive here without a booking, just keep in mind that the room rates are high at the entry point. They get cheaper as you enter the village and walk on the narrow road.

There are various online options to book hotels in Dharamkot like Booking.com Hostelworld.com and more. In my opinion, Dharamkot Inn, Alt Life, Zostel, and Shalom Backpackers are the best places to stay in Dharamkot. You can easily find decent accommodation at around INR 500.

Owing to its high altitude, the weather of Dharamkot remains cool and pleasant for most of the year. Winters here can be a bit harsh though for some people. From December until February, the region receives moderate snowfall and the temperature remains close to zero at this time. Things start to warm up a bit in March and this is when the tourist season here begins. The months of April, May, and June bring moderately warm days and pleasant nights which attracts thousands of tourists in the nearby areas of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Days, in fact, can get a little hot here in June but nights mostly remain pleasant.

July and August is the time of monsoon and it can pretty much rain anywhere and anytime in these two months. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for several days, enough to cause landslides and block roads. Monsoon recedes in early September but leaves behind plenty of greenery making the region look like it has just been washed clean. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green now turns Orange, giving a golden magical touch to the valleys around.

Winter starts to settle in towards the end of October and temperature starts to dip down again. By Mid-December, a snowfall can happen anytime, covering the entire region under a sheet of white.

Dharamkot is just a small village and there isn’t much to buy here. There are only a handful of shops here selling groceries and other daily commodities. The best time to visit Dharamkot will be from mid – September to June. The monsoons arrive in July and will continue till mid – September. This season is not good for travelling around Dharamkot as there may be landslides. Summer starts in March and continues till June and temperature varies between 220C to 380 C. Autumn, from mid – September to November is excellent and the climate is generally pleasant at that time. Visitors can take light woolen / cotton clothes in summer and since winters will be severe, heavy woolen clothes are recommended.

A lovely place for meditation, there are a few meditation centres in and around Kangra – Vipasana Meditation Centre, Thushitha Meditation Centre, which is a study centre for the Mahayana system of Buddhism and Dhamma Shikara.

Trekking is another activity that is prevalent in this area. Dharamkot is actually a base for the long haul trekkers as well as for the shorter trail. During summer, Paragliding is another activity and skiing is also held in the higher slopes.

Manikarnika was married to the Maharaja of Jhansi Gangadhar Rao Newalkar and then afterwards called Lakshmibai in honour of the Hindu goddess Laxmi and according to the Maharashtrian tradition of women being given a new name after marriage called Rani Lakshmibai.

In 1861 the British Government gave the Jhansi fort and Jhansi city to JiyajiRao Scandia. Jhansi was then became a part of Gwalior state. In 1886 Britishers took back Jhansi from Gwalior state. Other attractions of the festival include handicraft fair and traditional folk performances by local artists. Last but not the least, the festival is intended to advertise the state of Uttar Pradesh as one of the most accessible destinations for health tourism.

There is the state vegetables and flowers exhibition that are worth visiting while in Jhansi. This is basically an exhibition that lasts three days and is organized by the state government. The exhibition is held in the state gardens of Narayan Bagh during the month of February. Jhansi is a historic city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It lies in the region of Bundelkhand on the banks of Uttar Pradesh. Jhansi is the administrative headquters of Jhansi district and Jhansi division. Called the gateway of Bundelkhand.

  • Jhansi Fort from the pages of Jhansi The Home of Jhansi ki Rani

    As stated earlier, the structure of the Jhansi Fort is a mixture of elements taken from both Maratha and Bundela styles. This is because the fort was initially constructed by Bundela Rajput Chief in 1613. After that, the Mughal Army attacked Jhansi in 1728. The then ruler of Jhansi, Maharaja Chhatrasal got help from Peshwa Bajirao to defeat the Mughal Army. To show his gratitude towards the Peshwa, Maharaja Chhatrasal gave a part of Jhansi to him. Peshwa Bajirao constructed the rest of Jhansi and even extended the complexes. That is how the fortress came to be built with both styles.

It was built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo (1606-27) of Orchha on a rocky hill Bangra in the town of Balwant agar. The fort has ten gates (Darwaja). Some of these are Khandero Gate, Datia Darwaza, Unnao gate, Jharna Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orchha Gate, Sainyar Gate, Chand Gate. 

    Among places of interest within the main fort area are the Karak Bijli Toup (Tank), Rani Jhansi Garden, Shiv temple and a “Mazar” of Ghulam Gaus Khan, Moti Bai and Khuda Baksh. The Jhansi fort, a living testimony of ancient glamor and valour, also has a fine collection of sculptures which provide an excellent inside into the eventful history of Bundelkhand.

Constructed by Raghunath II Constructed by Raghunath II Newalkar in the 18th century, Rani Mahal or the Queen’s Palace was the erstwhile residence of Rani Lakshmi bai, the Rani of Jhansi. It has now been converted into a museum, which houses a vast collection of archaeological remains from the period between the 9th and 12th centuries AD.

The palace reflects a typical Bundelkhand style of architecture with its open courtyards and arched chambers. It is said that it was in this palace that Rani Lakshmi bai plotted with Tantya Tope and Nana Sahib on how to overcome the colonial rule. Legend has it that after the Rani’s defeat, the British ravaged the palace.

Rani Mahal in Jhansi, translating to the queen’s palace, is the former residence and royal palace of Rani Lakshmi Bai. Built in the 18th century, a large part of this beauty was destroyed during the Indian Rebellion. However, it was later renovated into a museum with artefacts from the 9th century and life of Rani Lakshmi bai.

It was built in 1501 AD by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh of the Bundela dynasty. It is a manifestation of Rajput and Mughal architecture flamboyantly decorated with latticed windows, projected platforms and balconies and mirrors on ceilings. Built by the descendants of the Bundela Dynasty, the Orchha Fort complex houses several monuments such as the Raja Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal and also gardens such as the Phoolon Bagh.

Rani Lakshmi Bai Park located in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh is set in the foothills of Jhansi Fort and is interconnected to Maithili Sharan Gupta Park. At the center of the park there is a magnificent bronze statue of Rani Lakshmi Bai riding her horse, her sword raised and her adopted son Anand Rao, sitting behind her.

Jahangir MahalJahangir Mahal was built in the 17th century by Raja Bir Singh Deo and was named after the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. There are several other structures around the mahal, including a fort, a palace, cenotaphs in the town, and another palace referred to as the Collector’s Office, which has been turned into a state museum. The palace is an impressive structure. 

Heavy yet light, climbing three storeys high with apartments topped with domes and hanging balconies, it’s a fetching mix of Indo-Islamic architecture. Note the two elephants gracing its eastern entrance and the crouching male sculptures on the canopied kiosks gracing the roof. The last, according to some, represent images of the architects or their patron gods.

The Betwa River originates at an elevation of 470m in the Bhopal District in Madhya Pradesh. After traversing a distance of 590 km, the river joins the Yamuna River near Hamirpur at an elevation of 106.68 m. The total catchment area of the Betwa River is 46,580 sq. km of which 31,971 sq. In Sanskrit “Betwa” is Vetravati.

This river is mentioned in the epic Mahabharat along with the charm Avanti river tributaries of Yamuna. Vetravati was also known as Shuktimati.

The capital of Chedi Kingdom was on the banks of this river. The length of the river from its origin to its confluence with Yamuna is 590 kilometers (370 mi), out of which 232 kilometers (144 mi) lies in Madhya Pradesh and the balance of 358 kilometers (222 mi) in Uttar Pradesh. In accordance with an inter-state agreement between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in 1973, Betwa River Board (BRB) was constituted under the Betwa River Board Act, 1976.

The Ram Raja Temple is a temple in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage and receives devotees in large numbers regularly and is also commonly known as Orchha Temple. The annual domestic tourist number is around 650,000 and the foreign tourist number is around 25,000.

The specialty of this temple is that Lord Ram has a sword in his right hand and a shield in the other. Shri Ram is sitting in Padmasan, with the left leg crossed over the right thigh.

The Ram Raja Temple was initially the palace of the Queen Orchha. But that was until Lord Ram refused to be moved from there! 

Resembling a palace, this is the only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king.

Chaturbhuj Temple, dedicated to Vishnu, is situated at Orchha in Madhya Pradesh. The name Chaturbhuj is a combination of ‘chatur’ meaning “four” and ‘bhuj’ meaning “arms” which literally translates to “one who has four arms” and refers to Rama an Avatar of Vishnu.

The temple was originally built to deify an image of Rama, as the chief deity, which was installed in the Rama Raja Temple inside the Orchha Fort complex. At present an image of Radha Krishna is worshiped in the temple. The temple is noted for having one of the tallest viman among Hindu Temple standing at 344 feet.

According to a local legend, the temple was built after the queen had a “dream visitation” by Lord Rama directing her to build a temple for Him; while Madhukar Shah was a devotee of Krishna, his wife’s dedication was to Rama.

Following the approval to build the Chaturbhuja Temple, the queen went to Ayodhya to obtain an image of Lord Rama that was to be enshrined in her new temple. When she came back from Ayodhya with the image of Rama, initially she kept the idol in her palace, called Rani Mahal, as the Chaturbhuj Temple was still under construction. She was, however, unaware of an injunction that the image to be deified in a temple could not be kept in a palace.

Lakshmi Bai is the Hindi poem Jhansi ki Rani written by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. An emotionally charged description of the life of Rani Lakshmi bai, it is often taught in schools in India. A popular stanza from it reads:

बुंदेले हरबोलों के मुँह हमने सुनी कहानी थी, खूब लड़ी मर्दानी वह तो झाँसी वाली रानी थी।।

Translation: “From the bards of Bundela we have heard this story / She fought valiantly like a man; she was the queen of Jhansi.”

For Marathi people there is an equally well-known ballad about the brave queen penned at the spot near Gwalior where she died in battle, by B. R. Tambe, who was a poet laureate of Maharashtra and of her clan. A couple of stanzas run like this:

रे हिंदबांधवा, थांब या स्थळीं अश्रु दोन ढाळीं /

ती पराक्रमाची ज्योत मावळे इथे झाशिवाली / … / घोड्यावर खंद्या स्वार, हातात नंगि तर्वार / खणखणा करित ती वार / गोर्‍यांची कोंडी फोडित पाडित वीर इथे आली /

My 11 pm Train to Jaipur, travelling by train is one of the most awe-striking experiences I have ever faced. It is an experience of lifetime and is a memory to cherish. A Train Journey is beautiful and the is no scope to get bored.

The crowd is so Universal that one can spot people belonging to most meagre professions & people belonging to high paid Jobs, Beggars, midwives and maidservants. I was in train and I buy some Salted peanuts in small pouches toffees and Namkeens! I had made some friend while travelling to train to grab a bite to eat with. I’ve had incredibly enlightening discussion about global issues, laughed Until I cried and made Unforgettable memories. Places to Visit in Amritsar – One of Amritsar’s greatest attractions and its spiritual hub is the Sri Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the Golden Temple. This is the holiest temple in the Sikh faith.

Guru Ramdas Sahib, the 4th of 10 Sikh gurus, constructed the temple and its pool in the 1500s as a place of worship for all.

The temple has been renovated many times, adding features such as the marble inlays along the floor. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire of India (1799-1849) had the temple’s upper floors covered in 750 kilos of pure gold.

Devotees bathe in the Golden Temple’s holy pool. All visitors must remain barefoot, and everyone passes through a separate foot-washing pool before entry.

Temple’s workers distribute water from the pool surrounding the temple. The water is considered holy, and visitors take home bottles for purification and health.

There are signs telling you not to take photos but, to be honest, everyone is! The one place you really can’t is inside the Golden Temple itself but, depending on the length of the queue, you might not even go inside. Visiting a golden temple is free.

The city of Amritsar is set around the majestic Golden Temple, the world’s most important pilgrimage site for Sikhs. But that’s not all there are plenty of other things to do in Amritsar and I’m hoping to run you through them all.

Amritsar is a city in the north western Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometres from the border with Pakistan. At the centre of its walled old town, the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara of the Sikh religion. Located in the state of Punjab, Amritsar has a mere 2.5 million people: a small city by Indian standards! Amritsar was one of the cheapest places to travel in India.

Before we explore the many things to do in Amritsar, let’s touch upon the city’s rich history. Over 500 years ago, the land Amritsar is built upon was bought for 700 rupees. Fracking’ bargain!

Amritsar was founded by Sri Guru Ramdas’s ji, the fourth guru of the Sikhs in about 1574 A.D.

Before the city was founded, the area was covered with thick forests and had several lakes. To start the city the Guru invited 52 traders from different sectors belongings to nearby places like Patti and Kasur to settle here.

According to the historical Sikh records, the site was chosen by Guru Amar Das and called Guru da Chakk, after he had asked Ram Das to find land to start a new town with a man-made pool as its central point. He started by completing the pool, and building his new official Guru centre and home next to it. He invited merchants and artisans from other parts of India to settle into the new town with him. The town grew to become the city of Amritsar, and the pool area grew into a temple complex after his son built the gurdwara Harmandir Sahib, and installed the scripture of Sikhism inside the new temple in 1604.

Old walled city

 Uruk in ancient Sumer (Mesopotamia) is one of the world’s oldest known walled cities. Before that, the proto-city of Jericho in the West Bank had a wall surrounding it as early as the 8th millennium BC. The earliest known town wall in Europe is of Solnitsata, built in the 6th or 5th millennium BC.

Later, Sher Singh continued with the construction of the wall with twelve gates (Lahori Darwaja, Khazana, Hakeema, Rangar Nangalia, Gilwali, Ramgarhia, Doburji, Ahluwalia, Deori Kalan, Rambagh Deori, Shahzada and Lohgarh) in it and a fort named Dhoor Kot that had fortification 25 yards broad and 7 yards high. The circumference of the walled city was around five miles. Amritsar was a walled city and they build thirteenth gate to it known as Hall Gate.

Other events that have shaped Amritsar’s history include the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre where the British shot dead hundreds of innocent civilians, and Operation Blue Star, the standoff between the governments and militant Sikhs inside the Golden Temple. The government killed 83 Sikhs and the prime minister was subsequently assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards. A bloody history, to say the least!

4.    Pul Kanjari

Pul Kanjari, popularly known as Amritsar’s Taj Mahal, is a village based on the vibrant expression of love by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Situated close the Wagah border, this town is historically significant as Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his troops would rest here while travelling between Amritsar and Lahore. An important trading centre during the 18th century, the town was named after a small bridge built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh over the canal between Amritsar and Lahore for his favourite dancer Moran, a Muslim dancer from the nearby village of Makhanpura.

None were remotely similar to things I’ve done elsewhere so it was a memorable trip for me, even if I didn’t particularly love the city itself. Starting with the most obvious one, these are my top things to do in Amritsar…!

This is known as a langer to Sikhs. I loved this experience because it was so unique: we sat cross-legged on the floor with a delicious dinner and hundreds of locals doing the exact same thing. If you don’t know, caring for others is a big part of the Sikh religion. Community kitchens are a common theme in temples around the world. You won’t pay a penny for this meal which I think is so amazing.  I loved the efficiency of it all, including the water machines that pour into your cup without the staff having to bend down!

Take a village tour near Amritsar

Before I’d even got off the plane in Amritsar, my seatmate had encouraged me to visit the surrounding villages and even invited me to his house! While the latter wasn’t on my itinerary as a solo female traveller, I have no doubt he was being genuinely hospitable.

While I didn’t make it to the villages in the end, I hear they’re very scenic. The state of Punjab is known as a friendly and safe place, though I would recommend travelling with a reputable tour agency.

Shopping & wandering the central square

It’s a nice place to wander with some impressive architecture. You can get some total bargains while shopping, especially with these gorgeous shoes which are famously from Punjab. There are also lots of stalls selling kulfi (milky frozen yoghurt) and lassis.

 

Where to eat in Amritsar

No Amritsar travel guide would be complete without the best foodie finds. Amritsar is sometimes referred to as the ‘secret foodie capital of India’ although whether this is just by the patriotic locals, I’m not sure. Still, there’s no denying that the food in Amritsar is seriously good. I hadn’t had a real Indian meal since my last trip 3.5 years ago so you can guarantee I was loving it… Until I got sick!

All the places I ate were fantastic –

Those were really very popular and busy – so I don’t know if my sickness even came from something I ate or perhaps some bacteria or water I came into contact with elsewhere. It’s just impossible to know! I still want to share my foodie finds with you as I don’t think any of these listed were the cause. But as usual, use your own judgement, too – it’s all too easy to get sick in India.

This was an incredible spectacle that I would advise all tourists heading to Amritsar to watch. It’s on the border of Pakistan which is around 40 kilometres away from Amritsar.

Essentially, it’s a lowering of the flag ceremony where the army on both sides of the border meet in the middle and perform to the crowds. The army members will be spinning, kicking and marching to the applause. You will have to set off early (around 3pm) to make sure you get through the queues and get a seat. What tourists experience here ?

The experience gives tourists (typically seated in a special VIP section, once they flash their foreign passport) the chance to see the stark differences between Pakistan and India. On the Pakistan side, you’ll see men and women sitting separately in stadium-style seating, and the vibe is much more subdued.

On the Indian side, however, it’s a patriotic party. Bollywood music blasts from speakers as women dance in the street, while those in the stands wave Indian flags.

While just 45-minutes long, the entire ceremony gives you enough memories for hours of storytelling back at home.

Best food in Amritsar:

A famous ‘kulcha’ breakfast – this thick bread dish is a bit like naan and served with butter, chickpeas and other flavoursome dips. Eat it at Bhai Kulwant Singh Kulchian Wale for 80 rupees including chai.

Kesar De Dhaba – the most famous Punjab restaurant in Amritsar, hidden down a local alleyway. Order the Palak paneer!

Gurudas Ram Jalebi Wala – if you don’t know it already, jalebi is a deep-fried dough dessert served in sticky syrup. This street vendor is renowned after serving it for many years.

The world’s only vegetarian McDonalds – a random one but interesting nonetheless. You can find this restaurant in the main square.

It was the month of October and I was experiencing some cold evening in Delhi. Tired with routine of my service, I wanted to visit some Place which may otherwise make me fresh and live.

My reason for visiting Jodhpur from the Pages of Best 10 Places to visit at Jodhpur –

The teenagers in family wanted to have safari, some wanted to visit the Historic Giant forts, while others wanted to smell the sand of the villages, listen to the folks and enjoy with nutritious delicacies.

Jodhpur, yeah, Visit Jodhpur, was my very first reply to them. I made my point very clear to them. We can have safari, can visit huge gigantic forts, and off course can have Dal-Batti churma (Staple food of Jodhpur).And undoubtedly the unfolding evenings, also.

Kumar Uncle, are you very Confident that we can have a splendid tour to Jodhpur, inquired a little one. Yes, I know you want Jungle safari. Oh yes, he smiled.

Our Packing of Luggage from the Pages of Best 10 Places to visit at Jodhpur

Since the teenagers, young ones and the elderly people were ready for the tour, I became much more cautious to make the list of luggage.

The important object of consideration of our Luggage were –

  1. Pair of shoes and sleepers wrapped In a Polythene Bag.
  2. Air Pillows, couple of bed sheets
  3. Nightwear’s, Innerwear’s, towels, napkins, paper napkins, old but neat newspaper. Also comfortable clothes making easy to walk and climbing. Like tee-shirts, Bermuda’s, joggers dress etc. Most importantly floor mat, Sunglasses, Binoculars, and shawls for the elderly persons.
  4. Copies of ID Cards along with originals of each members, group insurance, Bath soaps, washing powder pouches, shaving kit, Makeup kit for women.
  5. A small first Aid Kit along with ENO Pouches and general medicines. A small bottle of Honey, Ayurveda Ahwagandha, Cinammon, Tulsi extracts, pepper, black salt and ginger. Also a small knife along with a Electric kettle and disposable plates, Sun glasses. Pair of masks, per person along with a Hand sanitizer, and its refilling Pouch, also.
  6. Some Packed food, sweets, Snacks and water campers or bottles
  7. Most important to Carry “Niramaya Buti” Pouches which will not only enhance your immune system but will aslo provide you with the required essentials like Proteins, vitamins, salts, minerals, iron etc. Also important for the older age people to curb their diabetes, impotence’s, indigestion, constipation problems

Commencement of Our Journey from New Delhi to Jodhpur from the Pages of Best 10 Places to visit at Jodhpur

We were 16 in numbers and had young ones, along with middle aged friends and our elderly Parents.

As usual we all opted for Train 

Its only through the train that we have a chance to interact with the common people. Travelling by train is time consuming. 

But undoubtedly trains are feasible for a common man. Undoubtedly in the month of October, it’s pleasant to Tour most of the northern or north-western part of India. Hence our Time selection was good.

We were finally in Train, while some were gossiping, the others were busy in detailing of the schedule of the visit.

The historic facts suggest that Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, Henceforth The city is named after him only. However It was previously known as Marwar.

The Afghans forced the Rathores to leave their original homeland, Kaunaj. Due to which the flew to Pali. In present time Pali is near to Jodhpur.

Further the marriage of Rathore Siahaji with the sister of a local prince. Helped strengthening of the Rathores.

The Rathores henceforth gradually gained strength which further led them to establish in this region. They successfully defeated Pratihatas of Mandore.  Mandore once served as the capital of the region but by 1459.

The Rathores by now surged for safety and security of their kingdom.. This very thought of the Rajput’s led to the formation of Jodhpur, the Sun City, by Rao Jodha.

Relation of Rathore’s with the Mughals from the pages of the History

The History reveals that the Rathore’s maintained good relations with all the Mughals, except Aurangzeb.

Most importantly it is to be noted that Maharaja Jaswant Singh supported Shahjahan in his struggle for succession. It was only after the death of Aurangzeb that Maharaja Ajit Singh drove out Mughals from Ajmer. He added Ajmer in the Marwar region (Now termed as Jodhpur) Most importantly Jodhpur grew into a modern city under the reign of Maharaja Umed Singh.

The state of Jodhpur under British Raj was the largest in Rajputana, by land area. Jodhpur flourished under the British Raj. The residents of this region were termed Marwari’s. The Marwari’s were merchant and had expertise in trade

In 1947 India became independent and the state merged into the union of India. Jodhpur became the second city of Rajasthan.

Bisnoi village was established by Guru Jambheshwar .   • The Bishnois are vegetarian. They have a peculiar dress code.
  • Traditional  wear of men is white dhoti, shirt and colourful turbans. Unmarried girls generally wear pada, pothdi, puthia and odhna. Married woman costumes mainly constitutes of odhna, ghaghra, kanchli, kurti and dhabla.
  • They are worshippers of Lord Vishnu.
  • The local people of Bishnoi village generally stay in small hamlets. These are referred as Dhani by the locals. The small huts have thatched roofs.

Rao Jodha the fifteenth Rathore ruler laid the foundation of the Mehrangarh Fort in 1459. This huge and vast Fort was laid on hill known as “Bhaurcheeria also referred as Bakhurcheeria ” means the mountain of birds. Various stories are related to curse and sacrifice with the Building of the fort. The Place was cursed for having draught and water scarcity by hermit Cheeria Nathji, who prior lived on this Hill. The etymology of Mehrangarh –

It states the word is driven by using the two Marwar words Mehr meaning Sun AND Garh meaning Fort. Hence  In totality it means the Fort where the Sun dwells .

Most important to mention that it carries an interesting fact associated to it construction. However the descendants of Raja Ram Meghwal as promised by Rao Jodha are still compensated by the Royal family of Jodhpur, as was urged by Raja Ram.

  • The fort stands tall, located at a height of 400 mtrs above the ground level of Jodhpur. It has seven gates. The main entry gate is Jay Pole. The fort covers an Area of 5 Km. The average height of the wall is 36 mtrs while the width 21 Mtrs.
  • The construction of the fort was done by the descendants of Rao Jodha. It took nearly 500 years for the construction of the fort.
  • The Architecture of the fort symbolises the mixed patron of Indian and Mughal Architecture.

I saw after ending my pronunciation that Nandani was excited like the others. My uncle and Aunty along with their friends were Planning of Temples visit, while the young ones were preparing the List of the things they were to do during visiting the Places of Jodhpur. We all had unanimously chosen 3 days visit of Jodhpur.

Finally we were at the Railway station of Jodhpur. Our Train arrived in the morning at 17.00.00 hrs . It takes 11 hours ( approx.) to reach Jodhpur from Delhi via Train. Everyone was feeling pride, for the tour which was otherwise to introduce us all with the rich culture heritage of India. The appearance of the Station Building was none other. And most importantly that “Garam Chai” or Hot tea being served at the station counters. The old ones, including me hastened for sipping it.
